In this session, we will explore the strategies that propelled TikTok to prominence, examining critical choices that enabled the platform to create and capture value. Participants will engage in thought-provoking discussions surrounding TikTok's competitive advantages, the implications of revenue-sharing for creators on platforms like YouTube, and the content strategies employed by Instagram.

Key Discussion Questions:

  1. How did TikTok become such a force in social media? Which of the company’s choices were critical for its ability to create and capture value?
  2. Does TikTok have a competitive advantage? If so, what is it?
  3. Do you support Susan Wojcicki’s decision to share 45% of Shorts ad revenue with the creators of short videos? Why? Why not?
  4. Do you support Mark Zuckerberg’s and Adam Mosseri’s decision to fill a third of Instagram’s feed with content from accounts users did not follow? Why? Why not?
